Campo de morta lenta (slow death camp). The notorious old concentration camp. Built in the 1930’s to contain Portuguese anti fascists till the 1950’s when it closed due to international pressure. Only to open up again in the 1960’s to intern independence fighters from Cape Verde, Giunea-Bissau and Angola. Finally closing in the early 1970’s.
